Lin-Manuel Miranda Announces Obama Musical “Yes We Can”
Lin-Manuel Miranda, the creator and original star of “Hamilton,” will return to the Broadway in early 2019 with his new musical “Yes We Can” about the life and presidency of Barack Obama.
Standing in front of his Harlem-based home, Miranda announced his inspiration, “In light of these troubling times, and seeing what the current administration has done to Puerto Rico, I believe it is my duty to lift up role models that our families, our children, and our children’s children can look up to.”
Miranda, whose family is from Puerto Rico, said the devastation of Hurricane Maria had increased the urgency of an already pre-existing plan to develop the musical.
Miranda has potentially inked a deal with Disney to produce and promote the new musical, and early leaks from the Mouse House are saying that Miranda will reach out of his inner circle, and collaborate with Moana Composers Opetaia Foa’i & Mark Mancina, or Frozen Composers Kristen Anderson-Lopezand Robert Lopez.
Though a potential wrinkle in the deal may arise, as just before publishing, we heard a rumor that Disney’s Bob Iger, a longtime Trump supporter, is pushing for the titular role of President Obama to be played by Disney star, Adam Hicks.
Miranda commented that there are several actors he would consider to play the 44th President, including himself, Benecio Del Toro, luis Guzman, Ricky Martin, and Jennifer Lopez.
Just after the announcement, Donald Trump tweeted that only a real American could be considered to play the 44th President, suggesting Jon Voigt to play President Obama.
Some sources say that Idris Elba is being considered for the part, provided he can get out of his commitments to play James Bond.
