Women Artist Challenge @VanGoghExp
The immensely popular Van Gogh Expo is coming to a close in Los Angeles. For those unaware, the immersive exhibit brings life to all the senses, arranging Van Gogh’s works in such a way to provide context to his life, stimulate the imagination, and inspire those who walk through it.
We at Greater & Grander were inspired by this, and thought, why not other artists?
So, Greater & Grander is launching our own challenge to filmmakers, and storytellers.
We challenge you to create a graphic piece of artistry based on the works of any of the artists listed below. We have specifically chosen women artists, and women artists of color, to highlight and raise awareness of women in the arts. Why women in art?
Because, as art historian Linda Nochlin said, in a deeply segregated system with long-entrenched institutional biases, women had never had the opportunity to compete on a level playing field with their male peers: “The fault lies not in our stars, our hormones, our menstrual cycles, but in our institutions and our education.”
As the art activist group, the Guerrilla Girls, have pointed out, less than 4% of the artists in museum Modern Art sections are women, but 76% of the nudes are women.
So, to raise awareness of great women artists, we challenge some of the great artists of today to take and reinterpret great works into a modern incarnation, through graphic design, or film, or Virtual Reality, or Augmented Reality.
